For the first time in 45 years, unlimited hydroplanes will race on Lake Coeur d’Alene when the Diamond Cup is run this weekend.
Ten unlimiteds will be competing in the event, which begins today with testing and qualifying. There will be two heat races Saturday, and Sunday there will be four more preliminary heat races.
The final is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday,

The last time an event was held in Coeur d’Alene was 1968, when Billy Schumacher won in the Miss Bardahl.
Now Schumacher is owner, with his wife Jane, of the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing.
Oberto and David come into this weekend’s race in first place in the high points standings with 7,915 points. Shane and Graham Trucking are in second with 7,252 points.
After this weekend’s race, the season ends Sept. 13-15 with the San Diego Bayfair.
