Grandview’s Marizza Birrueta won an individual title at 112 pounds and helped Washington win the team dual title with a 32-27 victory over California at the Women’s Junior National Wrestling Championships from July 20-26 in Fargo, N.D.
Birrueta pinned Cassidy Jasperson of Texas in 5 minutes, 13 seconds to win her individual title, while Grandview teammate Desiree Zavala won the 139-pound title with a 12-2 technical fall over Cassandra Herkelman of Iowa.
Viannei Perez, also from Grandview, earned fifth-place honors at 112 pounds, beating Kelsey Gray of New York 7-0.
Tatum Sparks of Othello was fifth at 148 pounds, defeating Nahiela Magee of California 11-1.

In the dual championship against California, Zavala led off the match with a 2:31 pin of Izzy Valles. Sparks followed with a win at 148, and Birrueta won at 112.
Chiawana’s Marylou Martinez lost her match at 121 pounds, getting pinned in 2:01 by Gabby Garcia.
Royal’s Brea Diaz lost the 125-pound match, getting pinned by Alyssa Gonzalez in 3:28.
Kennewick’s Austin Brown lost 5 and 3 in the round of 32 to Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge Island at the Pacific Northwest Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell, Ore.
In the girls competition at Olympia Country and Golf Club in Olympia, Pasco’s Jalayne Martinez beat Hanna Yi of Auburn 2 up in the semifinals of Flight 1. She will face Rachel Fujitani of Mercer Island in the finals.
Martinez beat Victoria Gailey of Tigard, Ore., 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals, while Fujitani beat Therese Warner of Kennewick 3 and 2.
