HERMISTON — After missing his first calf Thursday afternoon at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo, Nate Baldwin spent a few hours sulking. Sitting 28th in the world standings, he needs every dime he can earn to try and climb into the top 15 for the National Finals Rodeo.
In the second go, Baldwin, aboard his 20-year-old sorrel named T-Rex, turned in the top run of the night at 8.5 seconds, vaulting him into second place in the second go-round.
“I’m just outside the top 25 and I have to make up some money,” Baldwin said. “I’ve had 10 calves this week and I’m trying to get some momentum going. This should get me some money.”
Tyler Scales had the top ride in the bareback event with an 82-point ride on Starburst. His glory lasted about an hour.
Never miss a local story.
Caine Riddle, who opted for a re-ride after his first horse failed to perform, slipped past Scales with an 83.
But Scales still has the fourth-best ride of the week.
“I’ve been waiting all week to get on her,” Scales said. “If I pull a check, that’s all I’m looking for.”
While most of the other riders had a tough time getting competitive scores from the judges, Scales said Starburst can be an easy ride if you let her lead.
“When you have that horse, you get on her,” he said. “There’s no tricks to her. She is honest and she tries really hard. She can’t buck anyone off. I’d never been on her, but if you mess up, your friends will make fun of you for weeks. She does all the work, you just have to hold on.”
Scales is 36th in the world standings and is making a push for the NFR.
“Right now is the time to make the money,” he said. “The drawing game is what it is. You enter three rodeos on the same day and pick the best one. You are putting out three entry fees, but right now you are spending dollars to make dimes.”
The top of the saddle bronc standings is getting crowded after Tyrell Smith turned in an 80-point ride on Roll Over to join Cody DeMoss and Troy Crowser, who had 80s on Wednesday.
The steer wrestlers fared better than Wednesday’s draw, as Cody Cassidy turned in the hot run of 4.6 seconds.
Nick Guy had a 7.9-second run and is second in the average at 13.1.
The bulls have adopted Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust as their official theme song for the FCPR.
After just two cowboys rode Wednesday, none of the six made a legal ride Thursday. After two nights, the bulls lead 12-2.
In the team roping, Shane Erickson and Clint Harry made a run of 5.7 seconds, as did Luke Brown and Kollin VonAhn, who moved into third in the average at 10.5.
No one came close to Carlee Pierce’s Wednesday run of 16.92 seconds in the barrels, but Carmel Wright maneuvered the course in 17.44 for the top run of the night.
