As far as the three weekends of horse racing at Sun Downs is concerned, this weekend’s cards won’t be the strongest.
The first weekend always features some strong quarterhorses involved in trying to do well in the trials of some big races.
The third weekend features the best of those trials horses battling for the finals.
But many of those horses take the second weekend off to rest up for those finals. So the second weekend’s cards are sometimes tough to fill out.
“This is a tough weekend,” said Sun Downs racing secretary Shorty Martin. “But a lot of people don’t want to race their horses over three consecutive weekends.”
But there are still some good races to wager on both today and Sunday.
For instance, today’s sixth-race special, the Sun Downs Mixed Breed Horsemen’s Memorial at 880 yards, is always a fan favorite because it mixes thoroughbreds with quarter horses.
The $2,700 race challenges the thoroughbreds, which are trying to get up to speed just about the time the race ends. For quarter horses, the distance challenges them to maintain their speed after they’ve normally finished an event.
In today’s feature, there are three thoroughbreds and just one quarter horse entered — the quarter horse being Junos Last Cat.
But the oddsmaker has thoroughbred General Day as the favorite at 8-to-5 odds.
It’s a good horse, but Martin says to keep an eye on Churchbob — a Bob Lawrence-trained horse.
“That horse can run,” Martin said. “They were condtion races, but he’s won both races he’s won in.”
Sunday will also mark the return of the Sun Downs doggie races. Anyone can enter their pooch on Sunday to race in front of the grandstand. To enter, bring your dog to the track and contact the race office on the main floor of the grandstand.
The dog races are scheduled to run at 3 p.m. Sunday.
A bad second day dropped Trey down to $203.70 for the meet — down from the original $300 imaginary bankroll provided by the Herald.
We aim to bounce back this weekend.
For today’s first race, we’ll take Margiesdanzindots for the first half of the Daily Double, and box an exacta with her and Chica Caliente.
We’re taking Cpr First Copy for the second half of the DD in the second, then boxing a trifecta of it with Its a Royal Star and Little Fools Cash.
Let’s go with a $5 quinella of Enriques Miracle and Kipy Ki Yo Ki Ya in the third.
We’ll box another trifecta in the fourth with Fly Pole, Carrow the Sparrow and Hello Harriet.
In the fifth, we’re back to a $5 quinella of Mister Q.P. and Back to Wine.
We’ll take Enterprise Zone for the first half of the Late Double in the sixth, and put down $10 to win on hime too.
For the seventh, it’s Pinotman for the second half of the Late Double, plus we’ll box an exacta with him and Stormello Fello.
That’s $56 in wagers.
