SAN DIEGO -- Jimmy Shane continued his monster U-1 hydro season in the U-5 Graham Trucking on Sunday at Bayfair in San Diego, beating out hydro heavyweights Dave Villwock and Steve David for his second major title this season.
Shane in Graham Trucking was declared the winner on Mission Bay after David in the Oh Boy! Oberto, who finished first, was disqualified for a flagrant fuel violation.
The disqualification moved Dave Villwock in the Spirit of Qatar into second place and Jon Zimmerman, driving Jones Racing, into third.
The Oberto team filed a protest and chief referee Mike Noonan said all of the equipment involved in the decision will undergo testing to verify the findings.
In the championship heat, Shane put the Graham Trucking in lane one and challenged David throughout the five-lap final, with Villwock running third outside the leaders.
David had increased his high points lead over Villwock with the apparent victory, but saw much of that lead disappear with the disqualification and the loss of 400 points.
The final race of the season is in January in Doha, Qatar.
Shane, who won the Columbia Cup in Tri-Cities in July, earned 1,200 points on the day, winning two heat races plus the final to make it three-for-three.
Villwock finished second to Shane, earning 300 points in the final and 700 on the day after a DNF in Heat 2A.
David won Heat 2B to pick up 400 points and finished second to Villwock in Heat 3B to earn 300 more. But David was disqualified in the final and did not collect any points.
