EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Washington junior Shaniae Lakes finished second in the triple jump Sunday at the Pac-12 track and field championships in Eugene.
Lakes, a Richland High graduate, jumped a school record 43-feet, 3.25 inches, missing winning the title b one inch.
Lakes, seventh at the meet in 2011, had never jumped past the 42-foot mark before Sunday. She broke the school record on her third jump, going 41-10 to surpass Tara Davis' mark of 41-7.75 in 1995.
She went 42-6.25 on her next attempt, 42-0.75 on her fifth and then blasted out to a record-setting 42-3.25 on her final attempt. She is just .01 meters from meeting the provisional standard for the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials, which will be held in June in Eugene.
Never miss a local story.
The mark was strong enough to send her to the NCAA West Regional meet May 24-26 in Austin, Texas.
