Several members of the Tri-Cities Wrestling Club had a busy June traveling up and down the Western U.S., but their road trips proved fruitful in the form of several national championships.
Isaiah H. Gonzales, a 9-year-old nearing his fourth-grade year at James McGee Elementary in Pasco, won natonal titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling in the intermediate, 60-pound division at USA Wrestling Kids Nationals in Farmington, Utah, on June 27-28.
Gonzales was named the outstanding wrestler at the Western Regionals and National tournaments the previous week in Pocatello after sweeping the folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman titles.
TCWC teammate Jacob Olson (10, Ridgeview Elementary in Kennewick) added a Greco-Roman title and runner-up finish in freestyle (intermediate, 75) to the folkstyle title he won in April.
Mikael Failor (10, Finley) won the freestyle title and was third in Greco-Roman (intermediate, 80); Robby Vaughn (9, James McGee Elementary) finished third in freestyle and fifth in Greco-Roman at intermediate 60 pounds; and Darion Johnson (8, Richland) was fourth in freestyle (bantam, 60).
Two other TCWC wrestlers joined their teammates in placing at regionals in Pocatello: Alex Brown (bantam, 70) finished third in folkstyle; and Tyler Almaguer, who will be a freshman at Kamiakin in the fall, was fourth in freestyle and sixth in Greco-Roman and folkstyle at cadet (91 pounds).
Seven members of the club made a trip to Santa Fe, N.M., earlier in June to compete in the AAU Grand Nationals. Johnson, Olson and Vaughn swept all three titles; Failor was second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman and folkstyle; Riley Gurr (novice, 70) was second in Greco-Roman and freestyle, third in folkstyle; and Jake Covington (schoolboy, 125) was first in Greco-Roman and freestyle, third in folkstyle.
