KENNEWICK -- Whether hitting or hurling the ball, Brycen Kelly was a force to be reckoned with as Kennewick American roared to a 12-2 four-inning victory over Helena, Mont., on Thursday, the opening day of the Cal Ripken 12U 70-foot regional tournament at the Kennewick American Youth Baseball Complex.
Kelly pitched only two innings, but struck out four Montanans, and KA reliever Caleb Cope struck out two more over two innings.
Kelly also had a grand slam an six RBIs for Kennewick American. Teammate Dillon Plew hit twice for three RBIs and Hunter Spiva provided a home run.
But Kennewick National had a hard time of it and were on the receiving end of two shut outs: 14-0 at the hands of Willamette Valley and 11-0 in a contest against Meridian, Idaho.

KN ace Mel Crowley pitched four of the nightcap's five innings and struck out seven Meridian batters.
In the other pool play games, Eastmont bounced back from a 14-12 loss to Mound Time of Tualatin, Ore., with a 9-7 victory over Helena, Mont.; and Meridian, powered by home runs from Phoenix Hanneman and Damian McKenney, defeated Black Hills 11-4.

Babe Ruth 15s
KELSO -- Robert Bauman was strong on the mound for the Richland Babe Ruth 15s, but it wasn't enough as Centralia won 5-1 in the state tournament in Kelso.
Bauman allowed three runs on two hits in his five innings. He also drove in the lone run for Richland, with a fourth-inning single.
Richland faces Kalama-LaCenter-Woodland-Ridgefield at 4 p.m. today. A victory today gives Richland a chance to advance to bracket play.
In another game, Kennewick dropped to 0-2 in pool play, losing 5-2 to Hoquiam.

Babe Ruth 14s
TUMWATER -- Richland lost for the second straight day, falling 10-4 to South Thurston in round-robin play at the Southern Washington Babe Ruth state tournament in Tumwater.
Riley Thomas had an RBI grounder and Bronson Marvel added a two-run single to give Richland a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. But South Thurston scored 10 unanswered runs over the next six innings to win.
Richland also lost 11-1 to Kalama-Woodland-Ridgefield-LaCenter late Wednesday. It will face Thurston County at 6 p.m. today before championship play begins Saturday.
Kennewick beat Midland 30-9 in five innings. Malcolm Slack had four hits, and Levi Scantlin and Nate Newbry added three each.
Steven Blaine picked up his first victory in postseason.

Babe Ruth 13s
CENTRALIA -- The Pasco Babe Ruth 13-year-olds lost 11-4 to Centralia in the Babe Ruth State Tournament in Centralia 11-4.
Pasco managed just one hit and committed eight errors in the loss. Troy Simpkins came on in relief in the first inning and went all six innings.
Pasco plays Camas-Washougal at 10 a.m. today. If Pasco wins, it advances to bracket play. If it loses, its season is over.
After opening the tournament with a 6-4 loss to Hazel Dell Metro, Kennewick bounced back to beat Saint Helens 9-8.
Tyson Patten pitched five strong innings. Tate Spivey went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Moses Lake has gone 0-2 over the first three days of the Northern Washington State Tournament for Babe Ruth 13s in Poulsbo.
Moses Lake lost to Anacortes 5-3 on Wednesday, then fell 11-7 to Ephrata on Thursday.
Moses Lake plays host North Kitsap at 6 p.m. today, then finishes pool play against Central Kitsap at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Little League 12s
VANCOUVER -- The Pasco Little League all-stars head to Vancouver today to begin play in the Washington State Little League championships.
Pasco, which won the District 12 tournament last weekend, gets a first-round bye in the tournament, which kicks off Saturday at the Fort Vancouver Little League complex.
Central Vancouver takes on North Bothell at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the winner of that game will play Pasco at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Thirteen teams are in the tournament. The winner advances to the Northwest Regionals.
Little League 10s
Nathan Mitchell hit a ground-rule double, and Wade Heaton and Ryan Kriskovich also had doubles, but the Richland National 10-year-olds still lost 5-4 to Cascade in a loser-out contest at the state tournament in Redmond.
RN-10s manager Jim Kriskovich said that despite the loss, the team featured solid pitching from the combined effort of AJ Templeton, Connar Gibbon, Erik Obermeyer and Matt Kump.
"I'm proud of how they played, that's for sure," Kriskovich said.
