Contreras named Dust Devils manager
The Tri-City Dust Devils partnered up with its new affiliate, the San Diego Padres, last September. On Thursday, the Padres assigned the new coaching staff they hope will bring the Dust Devils their first-ever Northwest League championship.
Anthony Contreras, a 31-year-old former minor league infielder with the Padres and San Francisco Giants, will take over as manager. Contreras, who managed the Padres’ Arizona League club in 2014, was a ninth-round selection of the Giants out of San Jose State University and started his career in the NWL with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2005.
His coaching staff will include hitting coach Marvin Benard, a Tri-Cities native who played nine major-league seasons with the Giants, and pitching coach Nelson Cruz, who spent six seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies.
The Dust Devils will open their season on June 18 at Boise before coming back to Gesa Stadium for their home opener on June 23 against the Vancouver Canadians.
