Northwest League saves leader Scott Firth gave up the tying and winning runs with one out in the ninth inning Wednesday as the Tri-City Dust Devils fell 4-3 to the host Eugene Emeralds.
Firth (0-1) came on in the ninth to nail down the win but ran into trouble when he hit Jose Ruiz with one out.
Travis Jankowski then singled to left, and Auston Bousfield, pinch-running for Ruiz, stole third. A throwing error by Dust Devils catcher Robbie Perkins allowed Bousfield to score and Jankowski to advance to third. Jankowski scored the winner on Jalen Goree’s sacrifice fly to center.
Tri-City took the lead in the sixth inning when Josh Fuentes led off with a double, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Sean Dwyer’s sac fly.
Dust Devils starter Ryan Warner lasted into the fifth before six hits and three walks forced his exit. John Sheehan finished the fifth and threw two more scoreless innings in an impressive relief stint.
