It was over almost before it began, but that didn’t stop the Hillsboro Hops from piling on in a 15-4 rout of the Tri-City Dust Devils in Northwest League baseball Friday night.
The host Hops needed just three outs to score nine runs against Dust Devils starter Jonathan Vargas, sticking six on the board in the first inning and then getting a three-run bomb from George Roberts in the second with no out.
That was it for Vargas, but not for Hillsboro, which tagged on five more runs in the seventh.
All that offense dwarfed a nice start for Tri-City. Ashley Graeter tripled in a run and came around on Michael Benjamin’s single, all with two out in the first. But that short-lived 2-0 lead was about the only good thing the Dust Devils could take away from this one.
