The Tri-City Dust Devils lost a fine opportunity to gain ground on the Everett AquaSox, the Northwest League’s North Division leader, falling 3-2 in their first visit to Hillsboro while the AquaSox lost 9-6 at Salem-Keizer.
Tri-City (6-8 second half, 25-27 overall), dropped into a last-place tie with Spokane (6-8, 26-26) but remained two games behind the AquaSox (8-6, 31-21) in the second-half.
Hillsboro (7-7, 18-34) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Yosbel Gutierrez’ RBI double, and added two more in the third on a two-run home run by George Roberts.
The Dust Devils closed the gap to 3-2 after Michael Benjamin and Patrick Valaika hit back-to-back sacrifice flies. It was Benjamin’s 14th RBI in his last seven games.
Never miss a local story.
Antonio Senzatela (1-2) took the loss for Tri-City despite a quality start — three earned runs on seven hits over six innings.
