A Walla Walla Little League team had never advanced to the Northwest Regional Tournament before last week. Now, the team is headed in a different direction — the Little League World Series.
Walla Walla scored all of its runs in the third inning, then held on to beat La Grande 4-3 in the Northwest Regional title game Saturday to earn a trip to Williamsport, Pa.
Andrew Hall went 2-for-3 with a double and scored one run for Walla Walla, while Carson Jones hit a double and Caiden Thomsen drove in two runs.
Thomsen also pitched 3 1/3 innings — striking out eight — while Jones picked up the save, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings.
The LLWS is Aug. 17-27, with eight U.S. teams and eight international. Walla Walla is the first Mid-Columbia team to advance to the LLWS since Richland National in 2003.
Walla Walla team members include Tanner Swopes, Joe Baffney, Carson Jones, Landon Welter, Billy Duncan, Jack Lesko, Andrew Hall, Hayden Lomeli, Brixen Betzler, Caiden Thomsen, Drew Coleman, Rylan Warren and Keegan Weston. Coaches are Charlie Thomsen, Mark Welter and Eric Wood.
