The Class 3A wrestling teams in the Mid-Columbia Conference are chock full of state veterans.
So it may be somewhat surprising that the only two MCC wrestlers to win titles at Saturday's Eastern Washington 3A sub-regional were Kennewick's Michael Hosfield and Southridge's Bryce Overholt.
Hosfield topped Hanford's Ben Hoffner 9-8 in the championship at 126 pounds, and Overholt scored a 4-2 win over Sunnyside's Daniel Avalos at 182.
Otherwise, the mats at University High in Spokane belonged to the host city's wrestlers and those from Sunnyside. University dominated, winning the team title with 360 1/2 points, more than 100 ahead of second-place Sunnyside.
Never miss a local story.
"I don't think any of us realized how tough sub-regionals would be," said Kamiakin coach Jordan Anderson. "This should have been regionals."
Instead, regionals will come next weekend at Sunnyside, a change of venue after Hanford was believed to be hosting the event.
The top six wrestlers at each weight advanced to wrestle the top three from the Wesco, with the No. 6 Eastern Washington and No. 3 Wesco seeds facing a pigtail.
Hosfield cruised through the early rounds, including a 15-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals. The then held off Kamiakin's Damien Gooldy 10-8 in the semifinals after Gooldy upset the Greater Spokane League top seed 15-6.
Overholt, meanwhile, pinned his way to a semifinal matchup with Hanford state veteran Will Bishop, where he scored a 9-5 win, reversing a one-point loss from earlier in the season.
"He had a great tournament," said Southridge coach John Hogg, who Suns finished fifth overall to top the MCC contingent. "That's not too bad. Our young kids had some big matches."
Among the most notable matches were Sisto Santana Pina's 3-2 loss to University's Austin Stannard at 170, the same weight the Kamiakin senior won state last season.
"It was a different match," Anderson said. "They slowed him down. We got a week to game plan."
In the finals at 195, Southridge's Kevin Del-Angel lost 7-2 to University's Tanner Orndorff, who handed Del-Angel his only other defeat with a pin this season.
"It was a good match, close at the end," Hogg said, noting that the score was 4-2 in the closing seconds when Del-Angel had to get over-aggressive and got caught.
Southridge advanced eight to regionals. Hanford is sending five, including Jeff Weyand who placed third at 285.
Kennewick and Kamiakin each pushed five through. The Braves added another runner-up at 113 where Cesar Castillo lost to Sunnyside's Jesse Barajas 6-0 in the final. Also, Harley Kolp placed third at 132.
Sunnyside finished with two champions -- Barajas and 145-pounder Noe Palomino, who won his final with a 22-second pin -- and second-place finishes from Homer Romero (106), Sam Romero (152) and Avalos.
