Last weekend, Hanford senior Joe Traverso declared the CBBN 3A district tournament was tough enough to be its own regional.
Turns out the Falcons' 170-pound senior was pretty spot on with his analysis.
Tri-Cities teams swept all three state berths in that weight Saturday at the Eastern Washington 3A regional wrestling tournament at West Valley High in Spokane.
Kamiakin's Sisto Santana Pina scored a 14-4 major decision over Southridge's Kevin Del-Angel in the 170 championship. Traverso, who lost 3-1 to Pina in the semifinals, cemented the sweep with a 5-3 win over University's Austin Stannard in the match for third.
Never miss a local story.
The top three in each weight advance to Mat Classic XXIV on Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. For all three of the local 170-pounders, it will be a return trip.
The Big Nine dominated the upper weights, taking 14 of the 18 state berths from 160 on up. The Tri-Cities scored a pair of titles during that run -- Pina's at 170, and Connor Rosane's at 160 after his 9-3 win over Pasco's Lonnie Hurley. It was the second time in as many weeks the senior duo has met in a tourney final, with Rosane winning last week by a single point.
Sunnyside carried the team title with 162 points, 191/2 ahead of University. Pasco finished fifth with 118 points as the Greater Spokane League went 2-3-4.
The Grizzlies are sending six to state but just one champion: Jesse Barajas beat Eastmont's Fabian Wickham 6-4 at 103 and will go to Tacoma as a No. 1 seed as he tries to improve on his fourth-place finish last year.
Nathan Gonzalez (126), Miguel Guzman (195) and Austin Carmen (220) all finished second for Sunnyside, while Isidro Ramirez (138) and Sam Romero (160) were third.
Pasco freshman Timmy Martinez secured the Bulldogs' only regional title with a 5-2 win over U-Hi senior Keaton Vallance at 120.
It was the only win among the team's four finalists who comprise the school's state contingent. Senior Gilbert Mendoza finished second at 132 after losing 5-1 to North Central freshman Izaec Quintanilla.
Quintanilla was a one-man wrecking crew on area talent, beating Kamiakin's Harley Kolp 8-4 in the first round and Robert Mendzoa, Gilbert's twin brother, 8-2 in the semis.
Kolp bounced back with a big 19-3 technical fall over Sunnyside's Isaac Guerrero -- after losing to Guerrero at district last week -- before securing a return trip to state with a 3-2 win in the third-place match.
Deondre Sparks earned his first trip to state for Pasco with a runner-up finish at 138, getting pinned by U-Hi's Ryan Gabel in the final.
Kamiakin will send three to state, with Pina's sophomore brother, Junior Pina, finishing third at 120 following an impressive 7-2 win over Kennewick's Michael Hosfield.
"Junior beat Hosfield for the first time in his career today," said Braves coach Jordan Anderson. "We'll make some noise at state; that's what we were aiming for."
Hanford is sending four to state and was right in the middle of the league's big-guy domination.
After Traverso finished third at 170, Casey Enderlin was second at 182 after losing 8-4 to Shadle Park's Justin Miller. Teammate Benn Tynan was third at the same weight, and Will Bishop placed third at 195.
Southridge will send along three wrestlers, with Julio Aleman finishing third at 220 to join Rosane and Del-Angel.
