KENNEWICK -- Everyone -- Kennewick, Kamiakin and Southridge -- came away with something good from Tuesday night's tri-dual wrestling match at the home of the Braves.
But the big prize -- a waist-high trophy complete with what one can only hope is an animal femur -- went back home to the Suns as repeat winners of the annual Battle of the Bone.
Julio Aleman scored a pair of pins wrestling up at 285 pounds and Riley Hughes won twice at 145 to lead Southridge to a 49-22 win over Kennewick and 48-28 victory against Kamiakin.
"I've been wrestling forever, and the only season we lost (the bone) was my sophomore year," said Aleman, who personally housed the trophy for the past year. "It's good to have it home."
Never miss a local story.
The Suns improved to 3-2 in the CBBN and moved into a tie with Hanford for third place in league, that on a night when they sat one of their big guns, 160-pounder Connor Rosane, because of his high match count.
Kennewick edged Kamiakin 33-25 to improve to 2-4, while the Braves slipped to 1-5.
The Lions had a trio of double winners: Michael Hosfield at 120, who didn't give up a single point on the night with 3-0 and 10-0 victories; Brock Schuh at 152 with a 30-second pin and 7-3 decision; and Christian Gill at 160, with a pin and a tight 2-0 victory.
"That was pretty good for us," Kennewick coach Dwane Sitler said of the win over Kamiakin, "but we knew we had our hands full with Southridge."
Kamiakin logged a pair of double winners: Harley Kolp with a pin and 9-2 decision at 132, and Sisto Santana Pina with a pair of major decisions, 16-4 and 19-6, at 170.
Pina's 13-point margin against Southridge's Kevin Del-Angel was a surprise in a matchup of state veterans, considering Pina has been back less than a week after missing most of December with an injured ankle and Del-Angel is in the midst of a terrific season.
"There was no rust on him," Kamiakin coach Jordan Anderson said of Pina after an impressive showing in the night's signature bout.
The match nearly went to Del-Angel in the opening moments when he had Pina in position for his signature chin whip. It's the same move that his cousin, Cruz Del Angel of Kiona-Benton, used to pin Pina at the Bob Mars Tournament six weeks ago in the match that injured his ankle.
But Pina was ready this time, slipping away at the last moment on Del-Angel's first attempt and turning it into a takedown of his own. Pina led 4-1 at the end of the first, and then went on a tear, pressing Del-Angel from every angle and using quickness and leverage to rack up eight takedowns.
"We worked on that a lot," Pina said of the chin whip. "Coach worked with me, and we would start in that position."
Though they lost both duals, Anderson said, it was a solid night for his young squad with three freshmen and two sophomores in the lineup.
But the night belonged to Southridge, which won 11 of the 17 matches wrestled in its duals.
And no one looked better than Aleman, a 220-pounder who gave up plenty of weight to both opponents at 285. But that didn't stop him from being active on his feet and on the mat, and getting both opponents turned for quick wins.
"Those are big boys," Aleman said. "When you wrestle 220, speed is the thing. Quickness is a key, and trying not to get under them is another."
