Mercedes Haberling scored in the 56th minute to lift Southridge to a 2-1 victory over Chiawana on Saturday in Mid-Columbia Conference action.
The victory all but assures the Suns of the No. 2 seed to the District 5/8 Tournament, which includes a home game against the No. 3 team from the Greater Spokane League.
Southridge just needs to beat Kennewick on Tuesday or Hanford needs to lose to Kamiakin to give the Suns the No. 2 seed.
“It’s a big win,” Southridge coach Greg Sambrano said. “We’ve been in a lot of close games. We lost a couple in a shootout, one in sudden death overtime. It gives us a little bit of confidence as move forward into the playoffs for sure.”
Chiawana on the other hand is the Class 4A No. 1 seed and will play the District 5 title game at 3 p.m. next Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.

Kamiakin 4, Pasco 0: Rilee Castilla and Ellie Heiden assisted on each other’s goals, and the Braves scored four times in the second half to beat the visiting Bulldogs in an MCC match.
With Chiawana’s loss to Southridge, Kamiakin (14-1 overall, 12-1 MCC) moved into sole possession of first place with one match left against Hanford, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lampson Stadium.
“We want to win Tuesday. Not just win, but keep making our game better,” Braves coach Chris Erikson said. “We got outstanding play from Lauren McKinney in back.”
Erikson said she played 25 players, displaying her team’s impressive depth. “It’s nice to know we’ve got a lot of kids scoring an assisting,” she said. “We’re getting contributions from a lot of players, even off the bench.“
Lexi McQueary added her eighth goal of the year off an assist from Parker Lee to kick off the scoring in the 44th minute.

The win keeps Hanford in the hunt for the No. 2 seed to the District 5/8 Tournament with the Greater Spokane League. Southridge and the Falcons are tied for second at 8-5.
