Pasco girls soccer coach Justin Carey has seen a lot of matches and a lot of dramatic finishes, but he’s never seen one quite like the Bulldogs’ 4-3 Mid-Columbia Conference win over Southridge on Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium.
In the waning seconds of the match, Abby Buckenberger chased a loose ball inside the Suns’ 18-yard box, where she collided hard with Southridge goalkeeper Tiara Valadez. The ball squirted away, and a Suns defender tried to clear the ball away but instead kicked it into her own net.
“We haven’t had those kinds of bounces the last couple years. I’ve seen plenty of own goals but not with the game on the line,” Carey said. “It was a good game, and the girls put in a ton of work. They showed a lot of character to be able to come from behind twice.”
Angie Crutchfield had a goal and an assist to lead Pasco, and Mercedes Haberling matched that feat for Southridge. But Carey credited Makena Snider for making things happen for the Bulldogs.
Never miss a local story.
“She didn’t show up on the stat sheet, but she was really getting in behind and creating space for us to work in front of Southridge’s goal,” Carey said.
Allie Wilkinson added two assists for Pasco.
