Shootouts haven’t been very kind to the Richland boys soccer team lately.
The Bombers lost their last two Mid-Columbia Conference games in shootouts and were 1-for-4 on the year when going to spot kicks after Tuesday’s loss at Hanford.
But Richland’s fortunes began to shift Saturday, as the Bombers turned a 3-1 late-game deficit into a 4-3 shootout victory over Walla Walla at Bomber Field.
“Our ability to recover is what stuck in my mind,” Richland coach Octavio DoValle said. “Playing in the wind, down 3-1 with 13 minutes left. Sometimes you’ve just got to man up and play soccer. That’s what we did.”
Austin Herrick scored his second goal of the match — and MCC-leading 11th of the year — in the 67th minute to pull the Bombers within 3-2 before Juan Martinez tied things up at 3 with one minute left in regulation.
Herrick and Martinez also converted kicks in the shootout.
Richland (8-3 overall, 7-3 MCC) stayed in the hunt for the league title with four more regular-season games remaining. The Bombers are tied with Hanford (8-4, 7-3) for second place behind Kennewick (9-2, 7-2). Pasco (6-5, 6-4) and Chiawana (7-4, 6-4) are tied for fourth.
