The determination was there. Unfortunately the result wasn’t for the Hanford boys soccer team, which lost its season opener 4-3 to Lewis and Clark in both teams’ season opener Friday in Richland.
“I think we were pretty evenly matched. You can tell by the statistics,” Falcons coach Mike Pardini said after Hanford outshot the Tigers 8-7. “It came down to one or two opportunities we couldn’t stick in the back of the net. We just ran out of time.”
Austin Giem gave Lewis and Clark a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute before Mario Zarate evened things up nine minutes later. The Tigers then got goals from Jason Ciaffa and Ben Thompson to open the second half, giving LC a 3-1 lead.
Kyle McMurrich then scored off an assist from Eduardo Barajas to pull Hanford to within 3-2 with eight minutes left in regulation.
Never miss a local story.
Thompson and McMurrich then traded goals in the final three minutes to end the match.
“It was our first game of the season,” Pardini said. “We got a couple goals back, but there’s obviously some things we need to get better at.”
