SUMNER — Royal’s dream of a state championship in boys soccer will have to wait another day.
The Knights let a pair of one-goal leads slip away in a 3-2 double overtime loss to the Chelan Goats at the 1A boys state championships Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium.
Eleazar Galvan, the Caribou Trail League player of the year, scored one minute into the second overtime after a Royal defender misplayed a clearance inside the penalty area and goalkeeper Lupe Arceo couldn’t come up with the loose ball.
That left Galvan in front of an open net for the game-winning goal.
“Chelan did a great job just causing us to make mistakes. We had a hard time getting anything,” said Royal coach Jens Jensen. “You could count on one hand the number of times we brought the ball down and played it like we should.”
Jose Gaxiola gave the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute off a corner kick from Cesar Bernal before Galvan tied it up in the 58th minute.
Royal again took the lead, 2-1, on a goal by defender Brian Gallardo in the 66th minute. That lead held until the final two minutes, when Alejandro redirected a routine shot on goal to force overtime.
That set up Galvan’s goal in the 86th minute.
“I don’t know how many times (the coaches) said don’t let No. 10 (Galvan) loose,” Jensen said. “We were looking up all the time and screaming, ‘Why are you not marked up on No. 10?’ ”
The Knights (13-6) will play Trico League champion Ridgefield (17-1), which suffered its first loss of the season Friday, 2-1 against Overlake.
