OTHELLO -- In 19 years of coaching, Othello’s Bernie Garza has seen his share of comeback victories.
But never one quite like this.
The Huskies trailed West Valley of Spokane 1-0 after 73 minutes, and a 2A regional exit seemed imminent until Othello scored four goals on their next four shots to earn a 4-1 home win Saturday and a return trip to the 2A state tournament.
“I’ve seen us score in the last seconds, but I’ve never seen a team score like that in such a short time,” Garza said. “With 10 minutes left, we pushed up all our defenders, and left two back to give us five forwards. When (West Valley) scored their first goal, they just played defense. That came back to haunt them.”
Randall Harris scored to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead that stood for the next 49 minutes until Hugo Martinez scored off an assist from Jorge Campos on a corner kick to tie the match at 1.
A minute later, Matt Jones ran onto a through ball from Ociel Romero and put a shot past Devin Scott to give Othello the lead.
“We had 22 shots on goal before that and couldn’t get a goal, but scored on our last four,” Garza said.
West Valley held Campos, the returning CWAC player of the year, to without a goal, but the rest of the Huskies lineup picked up the slack.
“That’s what teamwork does. We can’t expect Jorge to do it all the time,” Garza said.
Othello (16-3) will travel to face Cheney (17-0) — the top seed out of the Great Northern League — in the first round of the 2A state playoffs at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
