A couple games into the season, a nonleaguer at home -- sounds like the perfect time to mix things up and try some new combinations, get some younger kids some valuable experience.
Not when it's Chiawana and Pasco on the pitch.
Miguel Chavez scored the game's only goal off a feed from Omar Martinez 12 minutes in, and the Bulldogs held off the Riverhawks for a 1-0 win Thursday at Edgar Brown Stadium.
"It had that playoff-type feel," said Pasco coach Matt Potter. "It's a nonleaguer, the second game of the season, and it feels like a playoff match, which is cool. Both teams take it very seriously, but at the same time a lof of them are pretty good buddies."
Never miss a local story.
The Bulldogs' goal came on a buildup originated by Jovan Rojas, who found Martinez open for a quick cross to Chavez in front of the net.
Potter praised the play of Chiawana midfielders Ariel Gonzalez and Sam Nunez along with forward Rene Solorio. Potter's own praise went to Pasco's defensive line and goalkeepers Jose Ramos and Luis Gonzales.
"Each team had a cople of good chances," Potter said. "It was a great crowd -- it's fun to have quite a few people there. It was a fun game overall."
