OTHELLO -- Ellensburg won a controversial Class 2A state soccer match Tuesday, winning 1-0 at Othello as a disallowed goal for the Huskies has led to a protest.
Ellensburg's Casey Oltman scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute.
In the 88th minute, Ellensburg goalie Andrew Yoder had just made a save and was bouncing the ball on the turf in front of him, when Othello's Octavio Gonzales headed it away and kicked it in the net for the apparent game-tying goal.
"The ref blew the whistle, allowing the goal," Othello coach Bernie Garza said. "Then he blew the whistle again and talked to the linesman. Everyone was celebrating ... it went on for about five minutes and then they disallowed the goal."
Never miss a local story.
After the game, Garza and his team went to shake hands with Ellensburg's players. When that was over, Garza went to protest, but the referees had been escorted out of the stadium.
"Our principal will officially protest in the morning," Garza said. "I did it by e-mail (Tuesday) to the signing secretary, but they could just throw it out because it wasn't done right after the match.
"It's a live ball to my understanding."

Wahluke 2, Okanogan 1
MATTAWA -- Jorge Lopez scored in the 27th minute, Eugenio Cruz scored in the 43rd and it was all host Wahluke needed to survive its contest against Okanogan, whose Justin Rivas scored his team's lone goal in the 58th minute to round out goalmaking for the day in a Class 1A state tournament contest.
"It was a good win," Wahluke coach Arthur de Victoria said. "We came out a little flat and we weren't playing as we normally do, waiting until the twenty-seventh minute was kind of a little frustrating for us coaches.
"We were expecting to play better, but every once in a while you have to win ugly. Hopefully, this is the only game we don't play as well."
Cesar Tlatelpa had three saves on the day for the Warriors, who move on to play a state second-round contest at home Saturday against Cascade.
