Benji Sonnichsen on Tuesday announced that he had “decided to step away from coaching at Prosser,” after his Mustang football teams amassed a 58-16 record in six seasons. “This isn’t the classic ‘I want to spend more time with my family’ thing,” he told the Yakima Herald-Republic. “I am called to be a football coach. Our family mission statement is we do football. My daughters are the watergirls, and my oldest son’s the ballboy. My father’s the team doctor, and my brother’s our quarterbacks coach. We are on board as a family, but I need more balance in my life.”
The successor to longtime Prosser coach Tom Moore, Sonnichsen, 35, led the Mustangs to a 51-13 record in the past five seasons, advancing to the state semifinals three times. Prosser lost to Ellensburg 34-20 in the Class 2A quarterfinals Saturday.
