After the Prosser High School football methodically drove 75 yards in 10 plays to open the second half and tie the score against Kamiakin, the stage seemed to be set for a down to the wire donnybrook between two of the state’s premier prep programs.
“Well, then we finally got used to game speed,” Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin said after his Braves scored 28 unanswered to post a 42-14 non-league win over the Mustangs in front a near capacity crowd at Art Fiker Stadium. “We were a little slow-footed in the first half. We had to challenge our seniors on the offensive line. They were all out there last year, and they responded.”
Prosser coach Benji Sonnichsen, though disappointed with the one-sided nature of the loss was confident his young team would bounce back and learn from the experience.
“Kamiakin is a solid team,” Sonnichsen said. “So you can’t have the kind of problems we had, not executing, not making plays.”
Never miss a local story.
The Mustangs started seven underclassmen on offense, including three sophomores.
“We are scary young,” Sonnichsen said. “We are going to be an excellent team, but right now were just an average team.”
The Mustangs started well. After forcing Kamiakin to punt on its first two possessions, Prosser moved the ball 84 yards in eight plays, aided by a roughing the kicker penalty on a fourth and seven from its own 18, to take a 6-0 lead. The big play during that drive was a 70-yard pass and run from quarterback Mason Schutt to junior receiver Cardell Jones hat set the Mustangs up with a first and goal at the Kamiakin two-yard line.
Isaiah Sanders crashed over from there on the next play, but he extra point was blocked.
Kamiakin answered on its first possession of the second quarter, driving 53 yards in 12 plays. Jace Navejas caught three passes from Robertson to keep the drive alive, two on third and long and a third on fourth-and-four from the Prosser 15.
Robertson finished off the drive and the Braves the lead with a one yard TD run with 7:43 left in the first half.
Prosser’s next possession lasted only three plays and a punt, which Austin Gutierrez returned 63 yards for a touchdown and a 14-6 Kamiakin lead just 1:28 later.
Prosser’s 75-yard drive to tie the score on the Mustang’s first possession of the second half did not have a very promising start. The Mustangs were flagged with illegal procedure and delay of game penalties that forced them into a first and 20 situation from their own 15, all that before they’d run a single play.
But Schutt got his team out of trouble with a 19-yard pass to Adrian Lochrie. Schutt was five of six on the drive for 74 yards, including a 13-yard TD pass to Jones.
Then the Braves got rolling. Navejas caught a seven-yard TD pass from Robertson at the 5:57 mark of the third quarter, and Robertson ran for nine yards for his second score with 2:10 left in the third.
Senior running back Umid Ramizov scored Kamiakin’s final two touchdowns, both set up by defensive back Tyler Herman. The first was a 44-yard run following Herman’s interception of a Schutt pass. Ramizov’s second score came on a 13-yard run after Herman had forced a fumble recovered by the Braves.
