* After losing all-conference QB CJ Flores to Hermiston, the Cougars have tapped Hughes as their signal caller.
* The numbers in terms of returning starters have shifted in the Cougars' favor. Last year, Echo brought back two offensive starters (Flores and Bettencourt) and one defensive starter (Easton).
* Bither is the only player weighing more than 200 pounds. Thew is confident speed will help the Cougars overcome their lack of size.
After making the eight-man state playoffs in four of the previous five seasons, Echo went .500 in league last year. But with a large group of upperclassmen, as well as a veteran defense led by Easton and Lara, the Cougars might be able to consider 2011 a hiccup.
