BENTON CITY -- Grant Pierce's two-run double got Kiona-Benton off to a quick start, and Carl Robb made sure it would last as the Bears downed visiting Goldendale 10-0 on Friday in an SCAC district semifinal game.
The win sends Ki-Be (17-5) into the district championship game at 7 p.m. today at Richland's Bomber Field against Naches Valley, a 5-0 winner over La Salle.
Pierce, who drove in three runs, had the big hit in the Bears' four-run first inning, which also included a steal of home by Matt McCallum when the Goldendale pitcher made a pickoff throw to second, a la Bryce Harper.
"And then we came back with two (runs) in the second inning," said Ki-Be coach Clark Brown. "Then we just kind of settled down, and our defense played great."
Never miss a local story.
Robb came through with a big outing after planned starter Daniel Deaton was out with the flu. Robb used his changeup and curveball to keep the Timberwolves from dialing in.
"He just kind of kept them off balance tonight," said Brown, whose team locked up a second consecutive state berth with the victory.
