Hanford boys swim coach Kathy Piper hedged her bets Saturday by having a trophy ready to give to her team if it won the District 4/5 meet at Kelso.
Turns out she didn’t have to worry, as meet officials were ready to give her a new one.
The Falcons blew away their competition in the 3A meet, scoring 354 points to take the team title — 120 points ahead of runnerup Mountain View.
“We just had 100 percent outstanding swims and dives,” said Piper. “We were focused, quietly determined and we dominated.”
Never miss a local story.
Hanford senior Will Wertz was named the swimmer of the meet, as he won the 1009 and 200 free individual events, and swam legs on the winning 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
His winning time of 1:43.75 in the 200 free was a meet record.
But Wertz wasn’t the only standout for Hanford. Senior Karl Kintner-Meyer won the 500 free, and he brought along teammate Andrew Zimmel, as the freshman finished second in the event and earned a state berth.
Kintner-Meyer also swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays. Piper and assistant coach Randy Willis loaded up on those two relays, as the Falcons had already qualified in the 400 free relay earlier this season by meeting the state meet standard.
Junior James Bennett and senior Parker Shumacher also swam legs on the winning relay teams, and Bennett earned a berth in the 100 fly. He had already qualified for state this season in the 200 free, but he met the standard again Saturday when he placed third with a time of 1:49.09.
Junior Sam Hart earned a return trip to state in diving when he placed first with a score of 273.80 points over his 11 dives.
Joel Johnson’s second-place finish in the 200 IM earned the junior a trip to the state meet, which begins next Friday in Federal Way.
