The South Central Athletic Conference’s principals voted against expansion Thursday, rejecting a proposal by three District 6 schools to join the league.
The Class 1A SCAC, which has 13 members, voted to keep the league as is, with seven schools in the West division — primarily around Yakima — and six schools in the East division — primarily around the Tri-Cities.
“We decided to vote against it,” River View principal Bryan Long said. The reason was, “primarily travel and the time and the dollars for our kids is just too far. It looks like we will continue status quo.”
Cashmere, Cascade of Leavenworth and Chelan had all proposed to join the league, which would have created two eight-team divisions.
Never miss a local story.
The league would have extended as far south as Goldendale and as far north as Chelan, which is approximately 210 miles.
The three north-central schools have traditionally been apart of the Caribou Trail League, but five of the eight members left leaving these three schools in a lurch.
What they will do next year is unknown presently, though they could form a four-team Caribou Trail League with Omak.
