The 14th annual Nike Border Clash is set for Sunday, pitting the top high school cross country runners from Washington and Oregon in a showdown at the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Ore.
The local running scene will be well represented, including four runners from Kamiakin’s pair of state runner-up squads.
Austin Oser and Ahmed Ibrahim will run for the Washington boys, while Megan Beauchene and Michelle Fletcher will run for the girls.
Invitations to the event are based on placing at state.
Never miss a local story.
Walla Walla will send a boy (Sean Newcomb) and a girl (Courtney Cox), while Hermiston has five runners from its third-place state teams on the Oregon roster: Alejandro Cisneros, Eduardo Juarez and Jose Macias from the Bulldogs’ state runner-up boys team, and Maggie Coleman and Katie Markwick on the girls side.
The series has been decidedly one-sided in recent years in favor of Washington. The state’s runners have taken the last six boys races (scoring 15 or 16 points in the last four) and six of the last seven on the girls side.
While the scores have not been close of late, the series has had some dramatic moments.
As the Oregon boys were winning four straight races from 2002-05, their total margin of victories was 17 points, including one-point wins in 2003 and ’05.
Washington also has had 10 of the 14 individual winners in the girls race and eight on the boys side, including Kamiakin’s Anthony Armstrong last year.
