The Kennewick Lions are enjoying their best season since 1972-73, when they finished 19-4. Ironically enough, Shadle Park coach Tim Gaebe was a member of that Kennewick team. Gaebe has carved out a fine career with the Highlanders, leading them to a state appearance in 2009 and a sixth-place finish in 2010.
The Lions could be on their way to their own state appearance. The winner of tonights 6 p.m. matchup between eighth-ranked Kennewick (18-4) and Shadle Park (13-9) at the Lions Den will earn the No. 2 seed to the regional round of the 4A state playoffs beginning Friday in Richland.
The Highlanders are led by WSU-bound forward Brett Boese, who provides a strong scoring threat on the wing. Another threat is 6-5 forward Nick Bettinson, who could pose a big matchup problem inside.
"They're physical. They look to get the ball in the lane and attack from inside out," said Lions coach Bradyn Leyde. "Their point guard is a lefty, and he's good. He does a nice job directing the team."
Never miss a local story.
Kennewick is led by Bryce Leavitt, the CBBN 3A player of the year, and Reggie Clinton, who combine for nearly 35 points a game. Domach Domach has also come on strong lately, showing his poise in big games down the stretch.
