RICHLAND -- With both original host schools eliminated from postseason play, the 4A and 3A softball regionals will be held Saturday at Columbia Playfield in Richland.
Four Tri-City schools remain in contention for state berths: Richland in 4A and Kamiakin, Southridge and Kennewick in 3A. Walla Walla is the 4A regional's top seed from the CBBN.
The 4A regional originally was scheduled to be played at Larson Playfield in Moses Lake, while the 3A tournament was set for West Valley High School in Yakima. However, Moses Lake was eliminated from the district tournament last weekend, and Kennewick ousted West Valley in an elimination game Thursday.
The CBBN 4A and 3A athletic directors had to vote on moving the regionals to Columbia Playfield, which played host to the 4A district tournament.
Never miss a local story.
The move became official Tuesday.
"Being at home when you're going to play potentially three games, you don't have that two-hour travel time, that's probably more important than having home-field advantage," Richland coach Casey Emery said.
"We should be more rested than some of the other teams as the day progresses."
Regional play begins at 1 p.m. Saturday with two elimination games in each tournament. The 4A and 3A championship games are scheduled for 5 p.m.
