CONNELL -- Two unbeaten teams whose paths led to the 1A state tournament last year -- and could lead them back there this year -- clashed Tuesday in Connell.
Ashley Thompson scattered six hits and had 19 strikeouts on the day as the Eagles swept visiting River View 4-1 and 7-2.
Thompson also hit a three-run home run to get the Eagles (8-0) rolling in the nightcap.
Shanika Sawyer was 4-for-7 on the day for Connell, with an RBI in Game 1 and two doubles.
Never miss a local story.
It was a bittersweet victory for Connell head coach Andy Sawyer, whose father, Andrew Sawyer Sr., died Monday.
"The team pretty much played in his honor today," Connell assistant coach Ron Thompson said of the elder Sawyer.
Haley Hess pitched both games for River View (8-2), striking out 12 overall.
By taking two from River View, Connell is in prime position to wrap up the SCAC East championship with doubleheaders left against Royal and Mabton.
"I think this gives us an edge going into postseason, because we dominated it hitting, our pitching was good and our defense was good," Thompson said.
If Connell wins out, it would earn the SCAC East's No. 1 seed for districts and play host to the SCAC West's No. 4 seed May 19.
Meanwhile, River View is looking ahead to the playoffs, too -- and a possible rematch with Connell.
"Right now, my girls are saying we plan on playing them for the district title," River View coach Andy Clayton said. "We want to play them again. We want to be prepared for them."
