The Mid-Columbia Athletes of the Week for April 7, 2011.
Jovanny Rodriguez, Soph., Southridge
When Southridge soccer coach Chip Elfering was looking for a goalie, Rodriguez volunteered and promptly posted three shutouts for the Suns.
Rodriguez had played some goalie in non-school leagues, but hadn’t played since breaking his collarbone.
“I was scared to go back to goal,” Rodriguez said, “but I thought why not give it a shot this year and it came out successful.”
Rodriguez’s stellar stint came to an abrupt end when he broke a bone in a win over Eastmont on Tuesday, an injury that will sideline him for two to three months.
“He is a field player and likes to play on the field,” Elfering said. “We wanted to try someone in the goal and he said he would do it and he did it well.”

Sydney Cejka,, Sr., Richland
The Richland senior is used to hitting the cover off the ball, but last week was a bit ridiculous even by her standards.
Cejka was a combined 9-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, seven runs scored, nine RBIs and a stolen base in a win against Southridge and a doubleheader sweep of Moses Lake.
“I’m seeing the ball well and hitting it hard,” she said.
Cejka also continued her stellar defensive play.
“She’s got it all,” Richland coach Casey Emery said. “She puts up really good offensive stats, but any ball hit out there (center field), she tracks it down and catches it.”
This will be the end of the softball line for the returning all-state first team player. Cejka is going to Gonzaga next year which does not have a softball team.
She is planning on walking on (rowing on?) the crew team.
