The Columbia Basin College softball team was three outs away from losing Game 2 under the eight-run mercy rule.
The Hawks weren’t about to let it end that way.
Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick) hit a grand slam and Brenda Rodriguez (Othello) had a two-run homer during CBC’s 13-run sixth inning, and the Hawks rallied to complete a 10-9, 20-16 sweep of Treasure Valley on Saturday in Pasco.
“We just started hitting the ball,” CBC head coach Adrian Ochoa said. “Everything they threw at us, we hit hard. We hit down the gap. We hit home runs. It was probably one of the most exciting innings I’ve ever been a part of in fastpitch softball.”
The Hawks improved to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the NWAACC East Region after sweeping Blue Mountain on Friday and Treasure Valley on Saturday.
Rodriguez, who had a three-run homer in the second, finished Game 2 with six RBIs. Hannah Sams (Southridge) also had a three-run blast in the second game.
In the first game, Richland product Maddie Chambers homered, and four other Hawks had two hits in another see-saw contest.CBC went ahead for good when it scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
