Three Washington State players were selected Wednesday in the MLB draft, bringing this year's haul to five.
Second baseman Tommy Richards was the first to go Wednesday, taken in the 24th round by the Baltimore Orioles. Outfielder Kyle Johnson went a round later to the Los Angeles Angels, and third baseman Patrick Claussen was selected in the 34th round by the Miami Marlins.
They were selected a day after WSU teammates Taylor Ard (seventh round, Seattle Mariners) and Derek Jones (eighth round, Colorado Rockies) were drafted.
University of Washington football signee Shaq Thompson was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 18th round. After a yearlong hiatus, he played baseball this spring for Grant High School in Sacramento, batting .305 with 18 hits and one home run. Thompson told The Sacramento Bee that he would sign with the Red Sox and try minor league ball this summer, but UW football remains his No. 1 priority.
Never miss a local story.
