Aichele shoots 63 at Northwest Open; McCullough falls to eighth place
Jason Aichele of Meadow Springs Country Club shot a 9-under 63 to post the top round Wednesday and vault to a ninth-place finish at the Northwest Open at Wine Valley Golf Course in Walla Walla.
After rounds of 74 and 73, Aichele finished two strokes better than Andrew Whalen of Lakeview Golf and Country Club to finish at 6-under 210.
Richland high standout Drew McCullough opened the day tied for second but settled for eighth, shooting a third-round 73. After opening with a 67 and 69, he finished with a 7-under 209.

Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley (Idaho) Country Club won the event with a 17-under 199, while Whalen was second at 14-under 202.
Brady Sharp of Walla Walla Country Club finished 15th at 4-under 212.
▪ Richland’s Carl Underwood and Southridge’s Samantha Hui lost in the first round of match play at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship at the The Home Course in DuPont.
Ben Graham of Renton beat Underwood 1 up in the round of 32, while Hui lost 6 and 5 to Montgomery Ferreira of University Place in the round of 16.
Gerald Hein of the Kennewick AAA Outlaws received the Bob Feller Pitching Award after recording 24 strikeouts in American Legion regional and World Series competition.
For the summer, Hein pitched 100 innings, going 10-2 with a 2.03 ERA for the Outlaws (54-17). He gave up 38 runs — 29 earned — and 67 hits. The left-hander had 128 strikeouts against 37 walks.
Hein, an all-Mid-Columbia Conference honorable mention pitcher as a senior at Kennewick High School, is set to play for Yakima Valley College in the spring.
