How else do you explain some of the happenings in the CBBN football world this week?
Pasco needing overtime to get past Davis?
Richland getting spanked at home by Eastmont?
Walla Walla getting stomped at home by Eisenhower?
Hey, the Cadets had just needed OT themselves to knock off Davis the week before. Would that, until the happenings of this week, have led you to believe they'd go to Borleske and whup Wa-Hi by 30?
Mi compadre Ben bet me before the season that Davis would get two wins this year. I took him up on it, figuring that would be an easy win for me. Now, not so sure.
The Pirates look like they should at least end their 55-game league losing streak, extending through three name changes -- Big Nine to CBL 4A to CBBN -- if not make good on Ben's prediction.
And Richland sounds as if it is in serious trouble. Falling 21-20 at Pasco the week before? Understandable. But being down 31-0 at home to Eastmont (final score: 31-8) is a sign of a season on the brink.
The Bombers travel this week to West Valley, which just gave Kamiakin a good game before falling 21-10 at Lampson Stadium. If they play like they did against Eastmont, they could easily get tripped up by WV, and their season goes in the toilet ... just ... like ... that.
Congrats to Chiawana for getting the program's first-ever win, 20-14 over Hanford. The Riverhawks defense made the stops it couldn't make the week before against Moses Lake, and the offense avoided the mistakes at the end of quarters that proved so costly against the Chiefs.
More congrats, this time to Connell for going up to Cashmere and pulling out a 14-10 win over the defending 1A state champs. Oct. 23 -- Connell at Royal. Circle that date, because bragging rights for eastside small-school football could be up for grabs right there. Although River View, which knocked off Granger 34-19 at home and is 2-0 for the first time in almost a decade, might have something to say about that in two weeks when it travels to Connell.
Congrats, too, go out to Will Hoppes. The Tri-Cities Prep senior quarterback became the first 1B player ever to gain 10,000 total yards in his career, throwing for 283 yards and six TDs and rushing for 25 yards in an 82-32 win over Lummi on Saturday. That gives him 10,082 yards for his career.
Hoppes now has three other 1B state records in his sights -- passing yards (8,182, just 1,520 shy of the record); passing TDs (105, needs 15 more); and pass completions (467, just 102 short).
OK, that's enough on my day off.
Til next time ...
