I'd heard the rumor earlier in the week.
But it wasn't until today, when I made Walla Walla coach Marc Yonts the eighth and final Cascade Division coach I contacted for the football section, that I could confirm it.
Gary Winston didn't turn out for football so he could concentrate on basketball, in which he has a full-ride scholarship from Idaho in his hip pocket.
Can't really blame him. Could you imagine what would happen if he tore an ACL playing football and Idaho pulled its offer?
It's not the players like Winston, who have a scholarship in hand, who give up a secondary sport that bother me. It's the players who have promises of a scholarship if only they ditch their other sports to play club volleyball or select soccer ... and then you see them at CBC or Walla Walla CC ... that's when I'm like, "Why?"
What do you think?
Til next time ...
