Whew. I took a little longer on this one as all my spare time was spent hoofing it up the will between the Wookie and Main stages. In the span of just over three hours I saw Sun Kil Moon, Ra Ra Riot, Mos Def, the Decemberists and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Awesome.
Now I don't recommend this as I'm now hungry, dehydrated and out of breath. But the point is that festivals are the one place you can.
Ra Ra Riot put on the most surprising set of the bunch here. But that's mainly after hearing a couple of their chamber pop songs i passed them off simply as less-popular version of Vampire Weekend. Not even close. They combine some of the same cute pop elements as Vampire but they've got a lot more spunk. Combining a cello and violin they tore up the Yeti Stage even drawing a few onlookers out of the media trailer nearby.
Three songs here and I hiked up to the Wookie stage to see Mos Def. But I snaked around behind the stage to catch a glimpse of something i've never seen before. In a black van behind the stage I saw Mos Def sitting in the front seat bobbing his head to some heavy beats pumping from the car stereo. He sat there not saying a word getting himself into the zone.
Then the other two members of his DJ crew came up. He got out and they all locked arms, shoulder to shoulder and seemingly started to pray. Mos Def then tied a Mardi Gras mask and ran out on stage shortly thereafter.
