GEORGE — It's just after 1:30 here and crowds are still sparse.
But the massive sea of humanity that looms off in the distance in the Gorge campground suggests that won't last much longer. For many I'm sure a quality buzz hasn't quite kicked in, but the talent so far also hasn't been a heavy draw.
Vince Mira got things started on the Main Stage capably pulling off his Johnny Cash tribute set. He played a solid set of Cash tunes including a version of Ring of Fire that he sung half in Spanish. If you've seen Mira, you'd know he's about the last person you'd think would be a Cash cover guy ... that is until you hear is voice and with your eyes closed wouldn't know the difference.
Minnesota's Owl City was over at the Wookie Stage but I only managed to catch a couple of songs including their shout out "Hello Seattle." The synth-based indie trio comes across as a watered down version of Grandaddy — if that's possible.
Back at the main stage New Jersey boys the Gaslight Anthem. Rocked several tunes off their "The '59 Sound," then jumped into a faithful cover of Pearl Jam's "State of Love and Trust," lead singer Brian Fallon even struck just the right chord on Eddie Vedder's growl.
After he finished it, he said "I used to listen to that soundtrack on the way to school," referring to the soundtrack for "Singles."
