Nice to see Neko

GEORGE, Wash. — It was two years ago that I saw Neko Case at Sasquatch.

She was about three songs in when the skies darkened and dropped golf ball-sized hail, forcing her off the stage.

This year, she came with her proper band — the New Pornographers including Canadian all-stars A.C. Newman and Dan Bejar of Destroyer (who also played the festival.) Three songs in this time, and she wouldn't quit. The band was spot-on even when missing Bejar, who hadn't yet made it to the stage from his prior set across the field near the concessions.

Case, a Tacoma native, was in terrific voice, even when violently beating her tambourine. But in a band of such great musicians and strong talent you can't understate Case's importance. The power and pain in her voice ties it all together.

And if you've heard her solo works, you already know her male counterparts in the band have yet to release anything as powerful as Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

And I hate to talk about the weather, but this year has been amazing so far. There have been a few light sprinkles and temps in the 70s.

Compared to torrential hail and the gale force wind of last year, it's been paradise.
