Briefs: Liberty Lake's Nania wins Jr. bass title

Liberty Lake's Joey Nania earned his fifth state title at the Washington State Bass Federation TBF/FLW Junior Bass Anglers State Championships on Potholes Reservoir last weekend.

The tournament was a two-day format with the top junior club anglers from Spokane, the Tri-Cities, Seattle and Port Angeles.

In the 15-18 year old division Nania, 17, secured his fifth berth in a World Championship since winning his first at the 2005 Junior Bassmaster Classic. Nania weighed in 18.26 pounds and 14.42 pounds for a total of 32.68 pounds.

Second place went to Jake Cook, 17, of the Tri-Cities River Runners, who brought in a two-day total of 22.89 pounds.

Third place went to Garret McAfee, 17, of the Tri-Cities with 19.89 pounds on eight fish total.

In the 11-14 year old division, Port Angeles's Nik Autry, 14, tied into an incredible two-day total of 31.56 pounds of smallmouth bass.

National Fishing Week derbies set in Oregon

Four free fishing derbies are planned in the Umatilla National Forest in honor of National Fishing Week.

Events offer games, snacks and prizes. Children must be accompanied by an adult and participants must bring their own gear.

The first derby is 7:30 a.m. to noon today at Twin Ponds, six miles southeast of Ukiah, Ore., on Forest Road 52. For more information, call 541-427-3231.

The second is at 8 a.m. today at West Evans Pond, west of Clarkston on Highway 12. For more information call 843-1891.

Another derby runs 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Willow Creek Dam, south of Heppner, Ore. For more info, call 541-676-9187.

A derby begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Rainbow Lake, 14 miles south of Pomeroy along the Tucannon River Road.
