As election day nears, it seems to me that some vital information is missing for the position of sheriff of Franklin County. The sheriff's position requires a person with administrative abilities. Richard Lathim is that person. He has served successfully for more than two decades in the rural farming county. The larger cities, i.e. Pasco, have their police departments, which do their law enforcement. The sheriff's people provide these services to the large rural areas and small towns; the sheriff's department also provides many services in addition to law enforcement. To effectively accomplish all of these services and manage the budget is a must. Richard Lathim has been doing just that.
Changing the communication system to a high-tech, high-cost system is not the answer. That system has dead spots in the rural areas. The cost of $5 million is wild! Where will that money come from? Additionally, how are the dead spots going to be covered? The current radio system works for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.
I recommend that the good people of Franklin County re-elect Richard Lathim as sheriff.
