So, it appears the full media blitz is on for the sales tax increase. It's "just" three-tenths of a percent or "just" three cents on a $10 purchase, so no big deal, right? And it "sunsets" in 10 years, we're told. So how could anyone be against that?
Well, first, have you ever heard of a tax that went away? I bet not. Second, our sales tax is now 8.3 percent. This increase would make it 8.6 percent. What's the next "just three-tenths of a percent" tax increase scheme going to be for, another run at a "swim center?" Three-tenths more for a "performing arts center?" And what's the sales tax going to be when the state adds "just another" percentage to the total for some statewide pet project? Are we looking at a 10 percent tax soon?
Until the city of Kennewick starts charging developers an impact fee that could go toward an increased police force, I will continue to vote no on any sales tax increase.
