I was a Port of Kennewick commissioner when John Givens was executive director. I view John as a visionary and bottom-line results-oriented person. He envisioned what the Spaulding Business Park could be when recommending the commission purchase the 30-acre parcel and set a high bar for the building design standards. John recognized the former Metz Marina could be better developed if in public hands when negotiating that purchase for the port. John sensed Ti-Sport (now Ti-Lite) would one day be a major Tri-Cities international products manufacturer when accepting the company into the port's incubator program. John initiated staff work on the Clover Island redevelopment project when constructing the attractive island entry improvements along Clover Island Drive.
I recall John always recommending closure of Vista Field as an airport to be redeveloped for mixed use. He saw that opportunity as a "home run" for the port. John worked hard on advancing the redevelopment efforts of Historic Downtown Kennewick and as an advocate for the cities of Richland and West Richland, always looking for port partnership involvement opportunities. John will make a great Port of Kennewick commissioner. Let's bring this proven and community-spirited leader back.
