The May 22 article about the teacher walkout did not answer some questions: (1) Will the teachers be paid for the day off? If they really believe in their cause, they should not list the day on their time cards as a paid day. (2) Some of the teacher complaints are that student testing and preparation for those tests take away from teaching time. Many apparently think that the review time and the stressful experience of taking the tests is of little value. Why?
Students reviewing for and learning to take and pass tests is an essential life skill. Military trainees must pass tests to graduate and move on to further training. Truck drivers need to pass written and stressful performance tests. Do we want our police to know and be able to demonstrate compliance with legal policies and stressful performance requirements? How about the doctors and nurses? My son studied long and hard to pass a computer administered financial test to get his first promotion, and a future test needs to be passed to keep his job. Learning to study for and take stressful tests are important life skills.
