Readers of this paper know that we are in a drought. So why are we wasting so much water running sprinklers while the rain pours down? Why are private homeowners, schools and businesses spraying down the streets and sidewalks?
I go to work early in the morning, around 4 a.m. The sprinklers at Jefferson Elementary are going like crazy watering Hunt Street. I ride past Battelle every morning and get sprayed down even in the middle of George Washington Way.
Now, I never made it past my bachelor’s degree, but I know how to set, maintain and program my sprinklers. They even make rain switches that will delay or cancel the program in the event it is raining. You’d think with all the brain power at PNNL someone there could figure out how to water plants instead of pavement.
