The West Richland City Council did some amazing things at its May 19 meeting.
1. After a WR business failed to provide the $500,000 security deposit they’ve owed the WR taxpayers for almost two years, council simply extended the due dates. To date, that business has made NONE of the lease payments or security deposits, nor paid interest they owe, nor created the jobs they promised. Taxpayers make the payments. The council took these actions without discussion or explanation, and against the will of citizens present.
2. After mistakes by city staff resulted in over $50,000 in cost overruns on the city’s Yakima River Gateway project, the council simply authorized borrowing money from other funds. No mention was made by the council of how these funds would be recovered, or how staff would be held accountable.
3. The council announced without discussion or explanation that they would be talking with legal counsel about changing a valid public highest-bid land sale with a female-owned WR business.
4. And one councilman still thinks citizens want pot businesses in West Richland.
When will these wasteful practices stop and when will the City Council be held accountable?
